We can reasonably speculate on the Riot MMO Classes by Name thanks to Legends of Runeterra. For those who don’t know, Legends of Runeterra is Riot Games’ digital CCG (collectible card game). It’s based on the lore of Runeterra. Admittedly, not all of its content is canon to the true events of Runeterra. Nonetheless, we believe the Riot MMO developers have and will be looking closely at Legends of Runeterra for guidance.
Table of Contents
Possible Names for Riot MMO Classes
By looking at the cards from Legends of Runeterra we can get an idea of what the classes could be called. Moreover, the classes themselves may have visual similarities to the cards. Remember, each card was designed with a high quality splash art along with some flavor text. Again, the flavor text may not be canon but it still could be implemented into the worldbuilding.
Tank Classes by Names
Reckoner
The name, Reckoner, originates from the fighting arenas in Noxus. The Reckoners are fighters who are employed or enslaved to fight in the fighting arenas for large crowds.
Although not all reckoners are big and burly, several notable reckoners are large and intimidating.
Reckoners would make an incredible tank class. These fighters are not exclusive to Noxus. Through, in the canon lore and Legends of Runeterra there have been reckoners who have escaped and retired.
The possible Riot MMO class Reckoner would model the brute and barbaric fighters. Their bloodlust, raw strength, and daunting size would make them an effective tank classes.
Spiritwalker
All Spiritwalkers once began as humans. Through the veneration of the Spirit of the Great Bear, Volibear, they were granted powers to transform into monstrous beasts.
Among these beast are misshapen bears and massive wolves. Regardless, they appear incredibly intimidating and hardy. Equipped with the power of the storm they use spirit magic to enhance themselves.
Spiritwalkers as a tank class in the Riot MMO would contrast the traditional human brute tank type nicely. Their viscous demeanor would fit well into the tank role. We could easily see a playstyle revolving around a base shaman with storm powered Ursine cooldowns.
Damage Dealer Classes by Name
Melee Damage Dealers
Squire
The term Squire has adopted several meanings throughout the ages. Originally, a squire was an apprentice to a knight. In Runeterra, the squires appear to synonymous to an ensign (flag carrier), a rank ever lower than a foot soldier. Of course, this is unless the squire has been enlisted into the Dauntless Vanguard.
Still, the term squire is factionless. It’s not limited to Demacia or Noxus. Squires under both factions could share the same abilities without breaking the lore.
In addition, many of the higher ranks, such as captains, commanders, and generals are reserved for epic named NPCs. MMORPGs traditionally don’t have players attaining ranks equivalent to bosses at begin with. Furthermore, we usually see several lower ranking classes teaming up to fight one or two higher class bosses in group content.
Squire is on the table for a potential physical damage dealing class.
Buccaneer
It would be a shame if players would not role as a pirate class. We’re unsure what the Riot MMO classes name would be. We think Buccaneer would sound fitting.
The pirates in Runeterra could be melee based hybrid class. Wherein the could use a combination of close combat armaments alongside short distanced ranged weapons. For example, a Buccaneer might wield a cutlass and blunderbuss.
The Buccaneer could use this combination to overwhelm their opponents. It would be pleasing to have synergizing abilities to weave in melee and ranged attacks. Also, self healing through oranges, or liquor could make an amusing class design.
Fast-Paced
Monk
Among the factions of Ionia, Monks are commonly found in their respective Monasteries. While monks are not necessarily practitioners of the martial arts, the name has a nice ring to it.
Either way, fans will be expecting a hand-to-hand combat DPS class. Given that players will be expected to do combat, the name ninja instead of monk would be even more appropriate in terms of fighting gameplay.
The potential for the monk class is probably the most wide reaching. There are a plethora of Orders situated in Ionia. Each of which have a distinct objective, culture, and practice.
We could see monks specializing in, shadow magic, Wuju, dragon powers, lighting and wind.
Duelist
These fast fighters are not just limited to the Laurent House. Admittedly, not canon, the Demacian ensign fought a Laurent Dueler among other non-noble opponents in the splash art.
Naturally, they excel at fast, and precise movements with exquisite form. These class designs contrast the slower but more forceful warrior type classes. For example, the Squire type class mentioned above.
While the duelist is not quite an assassin, they are a fast paced melee dps class. Because the Riot MMO was announced to be action combat, there is a lot of potential for a duelist class.
We could see abilities including positioning, exposing vulnerabilities, and parries be the building blocks of an satisfying combat class.
Raider (Marauder, Reaver)
What would the combat class system be without a barbarian archetype?
The Raider class would fit that role. Fortunately, the term has been used without any bearing to factions. From Legends of Runeterra, the name is different depending on the faction. The Marauders are from Noxus and the Reavers are from Winter’s Claw in Freljord.
However, the Raider class would exude aggressive bloodlust styled combat. Two-handed weapons are encouraged. Nothing sophisticated. It could be a wooden cudgel or an oversized axe. No shields allowed. It would be fun to see charge abilities, increased damage when wounded mechanics, and high damage. Their visual design would be rugged and violent.
Assassins
Shadowblade
Those who practice under the Shadow Order possess shadow magic. These specialized ninja would make the perfect assassin class.
In Ionia, practice of the shadow arts is considered forbidden. Millions of Riot MMO fans would love to serve a covert group of shadow ninjas.
The Shadowblade could definitely be one of the anticipated Riot MMO classes. It would likely possess traditional assassin type abilities. Some of the following could include, dashing, high critical strike chance, stealth, high damage, disengage abelites, and edgy cosmetics.
Of course, they would be melee damage dealers with light armor and quick movement. What would make Runeterra’s shadow assassins unique is they actually use magic from the Tears of The Shadow artifact. Through elixirs and tattoos they can harness their shadow magic abilities.
Moonstalker
There are several assassins we’ve witnesses through Legends of Runeterra. An intriguing bunch devote themselves to the Lunari religion. They pray and hunt under the dim moonlight.
As well, they have their own weaponry. Some of their weapons are made from Moonsilver. That is made when silver is forged under moonlight. Complimenting that are weapons made from the rare moonstones themselves.
Riot MMO fans would likely be exited to play as graceful assassins fitted with armor and weaponry from the Lunari religion. If we could use fast striking abilities, with burns, combos, dual wielding, stealth, duskpetal traps and more, we’d be happy.
Ranged Damage Dealers
Ranger-Knight
The Ranger-Knight would make an excellent ranged DPS class. Although it’s a prestigious role, higher than a squire for certain, they do provide unique combat tactics. If the Ranger-Knight title is to be kept for NPC, then simply Ranger would suffice, as they are the subordinate role.
Ranger-Knight excel at wilderness survival. They make excellent trackers and hunters. Many Ranger-Knights equip long distance weapons such as bows. As well, Elk and horses are their trusty companions.
Not all Ranger-Knights have remained in Demacia. The Zealous Ranger, Sirius Rowill from Legends of Runeterra is no longer Ranger-Knight by title.
We could see Ranger Knights primarily damaging their foes from a distance. They could deploy traps and use the environment to their advantage to overwhelm their opponents.
Grenadier
Several Grenadier or demolitionists appear in Legends of Runeterra. Video game enthusiasts will always have explosive fans.
The skillset of the Grenadier class introduces an interesting dynamic. They could excel in several areas. For example, Grenadiers could prioritize traps, strategies, explosive weaponry, short, and long distanced combat too.
Currently, many of the Grenadiers are Noxii. There is one from Bandle City. Either way, Piltover has many inventors who have delved into explosives.
Magic Damage Dealers
Chronomancer
As far as we know, Chronomancy began in Icathia. Its practitioners are called Chronomancers. Initially, Chronomancers as one of the Riot MMO classes may sound overpowered. With some creativity, these canon, and unique mages could have a place in the Riot MMO.
Chronomancy students could be a utility mage. By using crowd control abilities they could slow their enemies. Simultaneously, they could give their allies speed boosts. In the lore, Chronomancers learn to create portals and Zilean can even revive slain allies.
Their damaging abilities wouldn’t have to be associated to closely with lore as there isn’t much info on how or if they do damage. At any rate, some of them equip staves. Zilean specialized in elemental magic, and Zilean created gadgets or anomalies in which he hurls at his enemies in League of Legends. So there is creative space for developers fill in the gaps.
Soulspinner
One of the more unique Riot MMO classes could be the Soulspinner. These once-humans have been given spider powers likely from Vilemaw, the Spider God.
The intent of these transformed are to offers souls likely to Vilemaw. With these powers, it would be fascinating to see a malefic DOT (damage over time) based class.
Similar to a Warlock, the Soulspinner could weave damage over time, slows, spider summons, and perhaps some self healing. The dark and evil nature of the Soulspinner class would be intriguing Runeterra spin to those who enjoy warlocks, necromancers, and the like.
Sandcrafter
Shurima is a vast region with rich history and individuals with incredible power. It wouldn’t surprise many if Shurima had some influence over the Riot MMO classes at launch.
In one possibility, we see Sandcrafters, or Sandseers employ their influence of sand to their advantage. With work, those under the guidance of Azir can learn to command the sands.
In the Riot MMO, it would be amazing to have Sandcrafters as a magic based ranged DPS class.
Imagine Sandcrafters flinging various consistencies of sand at their enemies. They would be slowing and blinding them with each attack. Perhaps the sand could be used defensively by forming a dense shield around themselves or allies momentarily.
Hybrid
Shaman, Mystic, or Seer
Based on Runeterra’s lore there cold be a class who communes with ancient spirits through visions or manifesting spirit guides.
There are numerous names, even in Runeterra, each with slightly different abilities.
Among them are Seers, Mystics, and Shamans, depending on the tribe and location in Runeterra.
Nevertheless, the themes remain consistent. These classes could provide a variety of combat utilities. Not limited to, damage dealing, healing, and animal mysticism.
The Freljord have Shamans. Plus, Seers and Mystics are seen in various places in Runeterra.
Belvethi
There might be a lore abiding way we can get our hands on Void weapons at launch. Of course they seem OP (overpowered). But, the flavor text of a few cards from Legends of Runeterra have characters using void weapons to save Icathia.
The Belvethi Elder was born in Belveth, Icathia. In her splash art she is seen using a void weapon. Additionally, Khahiri Returned traveled approximately a decade into the future and returned with a void weapon with the intention to save Icathia.
Let’s assume for a moment we could get our hands on some non OP void weapons. Typically they appear to be melee weapons, like Kassadin’s Nether Blade of Horok.
Conceivably, the Belvethis’ could equip and utilize void weapons that would cause debuffs, slows, and damage over time effects.
Healer Classes by Name
Illuminator
In Legends of Runeterra, the priests of the Illuminators religion are called Dawnspeakers. Again, they are priests. Meanwhile, there are several references in ‘priestesses’ in the lore and Legends of Runeterra.
Players will expect to have a religious based healer. One who embodies the light, justice, and virtue. Of course, in the lore, simply being an Illuminator doesn’t make you a priest.
At any rate, we can see an Illuminator class calling upon the powers of their Winged Protector, Kayle. With that, they might possess a fraction of the power bestowed upon them. Abilities such as smiting, healing, holy fire weaponry and other angelic powers are on the table.
Soothsayer
An interesting support class could be the Soothsayer. It is a Shuriman based role. She is manipulating water to heal and aid her allies.
As far as lore goes, there could be some ties. Recently, Azir as risen again thanks to Sivir’s blood. Afterwards, Azir resurrected Sivir in the pools of the Oasis of the Dawn. As we can see, in Shurima there is something in the water.
It’s possible a Soothsayer class could mend the wounds of their allies. Shielding, movement speed buffs, crowd control abilities, and more could be in the hands of the Soothsayer.
Most Likely Riot MMO Classes
If we had to break it down to the most probable Riot MMO classes it would look like this.
- Reckoner
- Monk
- Buccaneer
- Ranger-Knight (Ranger)
- Shaman (Mystic / Seer)
Those are the safest bets on class design and naming conventions. Reminder, all of this is speculation.
We have a small list of honorable mentions that didn’t make the cut. These Riot MMO classes could be included but probably wont.
- Enchantress (Healer)
- Shieldbreaker (Solari tank)
- Cultist (Ranged DPS)
- Revenant (Melee DPS)
- Mageseeker (Melee DPS)
