There is no Riot MMO gameplay yet. Nonetheless, we have three ingredients that will provide a clear idea of how the Riot MMO gameplay will look and feel. Riot MMO Gameplay Visuals
Unfortunately, we don’t have images or videos of Riot MMO gameplay at the moment. Regardless, there are clues that can help us imagine what the Riot MMO gameplay will look like. We’ll separate this topic into two categories. ‘Riot Games Intellectual Property’ and ‘Words from the Riot MMO Art Director’.
Riot Games IP Art Style
It may come to no surprise that Riot Games have several game titles now among other successful products, a TV series, music, books, esports events and more. Their IP (intellectual property) has grown substantially over the years. What has remained, is the art style.
All of Riot’s video games are considered stylized fantasy. It’s a broad term but here are some comparisons for reference.
Since 2019, Riot Games has maintained their stylized fantasy style. Furthermore, we’ve seen some gameplay of Project F (an ARPG in research and development) with the same style once again. Therefore, with a great deal of certainty, we can presume the Riot MMO Gameplay will be reminiscent of Riot’s typical art style.
There is strong evidence to suggest the Riot MMO Gameplay will look similar to League of Legends but in third person.
Riot MMO Art Director Responds
During Necrit’s interview with the Riot MMO team he asked the team,
Is the current Riot Games art style something you want to stick with for the Riot MMO?
In response, the Art Directed responded.
While Greg’s comment was vague, we presume the familiar comment will refers to maintaining the theme of the stylized fantasy art style Riot fans all know and love. Whereas the unique portion could indicate some differences in the texture, shading or other related details.
Riot MMO Gameplay Genre
The soon-to-be Riot Games new MMO was actually confirmed to be an MMORPG. This was stated by the former Executive Producer of the MMO, Greg Street. The distinction between MMO and MMORPG will make a difference when envisioning what the Riot MMO gameplay could be like.
Below is a table that contrasts MMOs and MMORPGs. This will further illustration what to expect in the upcoming League MMORPG.
MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) | MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online-Roleplaying Game) |
---|---|
Several players playing simultaneously | Several players playing simultaneously |
Ability to communicate with other players | Ability to communicate with other players |
N/A | Increased control of over character and world through storytelling |
Our LoL MMORPG is differentiated from MMOs by the storytelling combined with assuming the role of a fantasy character. In other words, Greg Street confirmed we will be playing the League MMO using RPG elements. Let’s break down RPG elements we could see in the Riot MMO game.
- Character Customization
- Exploration
- Quests
- Lore
- Character Progression
- Gear acquisition
- Skill and stat improvement
- Combat
- Group dungeons
- Group PvP
- Rewards
- Loot
- RNG
Riot MMO Gameplay Features
Base on our common RPG elements listed above, here’s what to expect.
Character Customization:
Greg Street previously stated the Riot MMO team wants to treat the League of Legends champions with respect. Thus, until more information is announced, we do not expect to play as the champions from League of Legends in the Riot MMO. Nevertheless, if you are interested in a new Riot Games RPG where you can play as the champions of Runeterra, check out our in-depth article on Riot Games Project F.
Now, we expect the new Riot MMO to have a character selection screen. Imaginably, it will likely be a personalized character with the fantasy stylized art style as mentioned before.
Within the Riot MMO character customization its highly likely we will choose our preferred race. Although unconfirmed, you can expect to pick from:
- Humans
- Vastaya
- Yordles
- Minotaurs
Based on the lore, do not expect to play as Darkin, Aspect Hosts, and Yetis.
And while it’s uncertain, there a strong possibility we can choose our starting region during the character selection screen. Stater and lore friendly regions of Runeterra that likely up for grabs on release include, Demacia, Noxus, and Freljord.
Exploration:
MMORPG games like the Riot MMO include exploration. Players will be able to explore Runeterra after creating their characters. After the character selection screen has been completed you will be ready to explore Runeterra. To begin, we may be introduced to some cutscenes and introductory dialogue with whomever or whatever we see first. After getting through the introductory phase of the game, players will meander and or fervently explore Runeterra.
Quests are a integral part of role-playing games. We feel confident the Riot MMORPG will feature quests in the game. Keep in mind, the Riot MMORPG team is hoping to innovate on the MMORPG genre. This was stated during their interview with Necrit. We a re slightly unsure how the questing system will play out. Either way, there will likely be dialogue with NPCs and tasks to complete throughout Runeterra in exchange for items, experience and access to features.
Moreover, through dialogue, and world interactions the lore will unfold further. Players will gain a deeper understanding and connection with the Runeterra’s events, history and inhabitants. More recently Riot Games has been developing their lore through interactive ways including a Universe Map and Riot Games games. Riot’s MMO will continue the trend of providing players more engaging ways to learn about Runeterra.
Character Progression
Another staple in the list of MMORPG features includes character progression. We are convinced the Riot MMO gameplay will include character progression. Simply put, as you make achievements while playing, your character will grow. Expect to see your character evolve both visually and practically. It’s very common to have these progression linked with a numerical value usually referred to as your level.
Most likely, through questing, exploration and combat, you will acquire gear (clothing, armor, and weapons) to use, trade or sell with the world. There are currently tons of weapons in the world of Runeterra. If you’re curious, read about which weapons we could see in the Riot MMO. Now overall, as your level increases don’t be surprised to find improved gear which will help offset more challenging content.
In addition to gear, we always see skill improvements too. We predict Riots MMO will include skills and abilities. Skills and abilities are at the center of all Riot Games’ products as well as MMORPGs.
Look at our Riot MMO Abilities page to get an idea of what skills we might see in the game.
As well, stat improvement is a huge part of MMORPGs. We commonly see stats, which are essentially character combat traits in RPGs. Some of the most common stats include:
- Strength
- Stamina
- Intellect
- Agility/Dexterity
- Heath Regeneration
- Mana Regeneration
- Damage Resistance
- Magic Resistance
Each game has a different take on these core stats. Of course, games may have other stats not included above. Ultimately, character progression is a core aspect of all MMORPGs and we will most definitely see gear acquisition and skill and stat improvement.
Combat
Many but not all MMORPGs will include combat. Riot’s games generally include combat. Therefore, we are awaiting for the Riot MMO to include combat. Read out our thoughts on what the Riot MMO combat might feel like.
Due to the MMO (massively multiplayer online) element the combat will at many points involve other players. This combination of multiplayer combat often provides several modes within the game itself.
Players would undoubtedly be disappointed if we could not fight alongside our friends, so expect to see group combat. This could take on the form of group quests, group dungeons or group PvP (Player vs. Player). The dungeons provide challenging content against the game’s AI (artificial intelligence) as well as coordination with your teammates. Accordingly, the PvP combat can be 1v1, 2v2, etc. up to large scale skirmishes. Riot Games is well known of their successful eSports events. Many fans speculate the Riot MMO could have a competitive PvP scene. Nonetheless, quality combat is a critical component to successful MMORPG nowadays.
Rewards
The RPG component of MMORPGs sets the expectation for players to receive in-game rewards. Typically, rewards take the form of gear but could also include abilities, access to features. Rewards for features usually tie in with the roleplaying thematic. As such, within the Riot MMORPG gameplay you might see exploration shortcuts, zone/region access, NPC interaction access, gameplay features such as flying, fast travel, transmogrification, (appearance modification) and more.
Lastly, rewards are not always guaranteed. There are variables as there are in life. Rewards may be awarded based on a percentage drop-rate or performance base. Among fans, rewards in RPGs are associated with RNG (random number generator). The video game programming will present an event seemingly randomly. RNG attempts to contribute to immersion and hopes to encourage the player to continue playing. RNG can be a controversial topic. It will be interesting to see how the Riot MMO handles RNG in the upcoming League MMORPG.
Riot MMO Gameplay World
Our final ingredient to help illustrate what Riot MMO Gameplay would look like in the world of Runeterra. It’s Riot’s words:
We quoted directly from Riot’s official recruiting webpage and created an Riot MMO recruiting article expanding on the subject. With that confirmation out of the way and putting everything we’ve learned all together we can say this for certain.
Riot MMO players will roleplay throughout Runeterra in a stylized fantasy design.
The League of Legends universe and Runeterra are interchangeable. Fortunately, Riot Games has published Legends of Runeterra, a digital card game with thousands of splash art and concept art combined. The plethora of assets designed for Legends of Runeterra likely provides the greatest source of Runeterra content. By looking at the splash art, you’ll have a clear idea of what the Riot MMO gameplay visual will look like. Some might argue the League of Legends Universe site serves more, although most of it’s content is text. Either way, here are some of the official sources of information on Runeterra.
Ruination: A League of Legends Novel
Of course there is unofficial fan content such as our website, Reddit and Fandom.
