When Did Riot Announce MMO
The Riot MMO announcement was on December 17, 2020. The former game director Greg Street created a tweet about Riot’s upcoming MMORPG. Usually we see game publishers and studios announce games through IGN and some epic trailer. This Riot MMO was announced in a seemingly casual fashion on Twitter.
Several content creators flocked at the exciting news. Moreover, gaming websites published articles about how nonchalantly Riot announced the in in-development game.
A subreddit titled League of Legends MMO Subreddit was created that very day. Likely prematurely considering the subreddit only has six posts over a span of two years.
Who Is Greg Street?
Discussing Greg Street is important when assessing this game announcement’s credibility. While this unpublished MMO is still in its infancy, following Greg Street will give us the most legitimate information possible.
At the time of the initial announcement, Greg Street (@Ghostcrawler) was the Vice President of IP and Entertainment and Riot Games, Inc. According to his Twitter summary at the time he stated, “I oversee League IP, Riot Forge, Arcane creative. Previous gigs: lead designer on LoL, WoW.”
Stepping into the future, Greg Street became the Vice President and Executive Producer of ‘MMO Research & Development” project at Riot Games, Inc.
In Greg Street’s LinkedIn profile he indicates, Riot decided to announce the unpublished MMO early in order to attract the brightest employees for this “monumental undertaking”.
What will the Riot MMO be like?
The first hint is a tweet Greg Street made two months prior to the official Riot MMO announcement.
Greg tweets that after a six year hiatus, he is delving back into World of Warcraft. It is possible Greg took it upon himself to revisit World of Warcraft in order to draw inspiration and exercise creativity for the upcoming MMO.
In the same tweet, Greg writes that he renewed for another six months. If our line of thinking is correct, it’s possible his revisit to WoW was beyond purely nostalgia but due to a feeling of commitment.
We cannot say with certainty, but it is plausible to think picking up new MMORPGs to play on personal time could expand his perspective as a game director.
It’s incredible to see that Greg wrote roughly 14 World of Warcraft related posts from the time he revisited the game after six years to the time he announced Riot’s in-development MMO. Of course, Shadowland’s upcoming release probably induced much FOMO.
