Riot Games Action RPG Might Include These Features and More
Riot Is Making a Multiplayer Action Roleplaying Game
We have certainty Riot is developing ARPG with the potential of multiplayer. This should come with no surprise because we have an entire page dedicated to an in-development multiplayer ARPG by Riot Games.
In the Project F clip from the League of Legends 10-Year Anniversary video, we can see a few player controlled characters running around simultaneously.
We strongly believe multiplayer will be implemented considering several of the other features listed above depend on multiplayer.
Project F Could Be Third Person
Until the discovery of this Project F news, there virtually no evidence to suggest Project F would be third person.
Keep in mind, the official footage we saw from the League of Legends YouTube channel showed Project F will an isometric camera angle.
Fortunately for player who feel is deal breaker can now consider playing Riot’s Project F if or when it releases.
Plus, several excited fans have compared Project F to Genshin Impact now.
Project F Will Have a Campaign
According to the LinkedIn job summary included above, Project F will likely have a campaign. Therefore, we can expect a rather linear progression through a story-mode.
Any good story should include the following:
- Setting
- Characters
- Plot
- Conflict
- Resolution
All of which, we should expect from Project F if the game is to be published one day.
Project F Should Push the Storytelling
The most recent position of the former employee was a principal narrative designer. Furthermore, they were primarily tasked with systems design in a narrative context.
This fact simply reinforces features such as, NPC dialogue, a campaign, and quests are highly likely to be in the game.
What better way to share the lore of Runeterra than through player experience directly.
We Might be Questing in Project F
Questing adds an additional layer of immersion, replayability, and fun. The very idea of questing in Project F raises more questions than it answers.
- Are the quests separate from the campaign?
- Will there be repeatable quests?
- Would there be champion specific quests?
- What rewards will the quests provide?
Zones and Levels In Riot Project F
We all love Runeterra. But let’s be honest, we love some regions more than others.
Based on the short gameplay of Project F, it appears an adventure was taking place in Ionia.
Keep in mind that video was from late 2019. The development of Project F could have grown and switched considerably since 2019.
We see two possibilities existing:
- Project F ships with one main region and we explore zones and levels within that region.
- Two or more regions are available at launch and there are various levels to explore.
System Design Features in Project F
In the world of video game development, system design iterates on game components that are of the control of the player. Example include:
- Mechanic System Design
- Damage
- Stun duration
- Status effects
- Class & Balance System Designer
- Experience rate growth
- Gear stat modifiers
- Economy System Designer
- Loot table algorithms
- In-game currency drop rates
There exists a vast array of components a system designer could be working on. The good news is, Project F could have many of these features.
Crafting Materials in Project F
Crafting materials are all too common in RPG (roleplaying games) such as Genshin Impact. Still, the former employee was actually theorycrafting, crafting materials.
Now, we still think crafting materials will be in the game. Understand that theorycrafting in the mathematical and algorithmic analysis of the function of a component in a video game.
You Will Encounter Challenges in Project F
The encounters feature is likely one of broadest features we’ve read so far. To put the term in context, we’ll include an excerpt:
From defining what form of content should fill encounters to….
Former Riot Games R&D Employee
To be more specific, we imagine encounters to define, ‘a distinct moment of engagement between the player and the game’.
Now we can let our imagination run wild. Think, dungeons, PvP, bosses, checkpoints, NPC vendors and whatever else you can think of. These are examples of forms of content within encounters.
Enemies in Project F
The unnamed employee not only disclosed development on enemies. In addition, they shared enemy design and enemy factions.
As a result, we can conclude, Project F could have creature types, and creature factions. We can include creature types. Because naturally, factions will consist of individuals with shared values and themes.
With that being said, is reasonable to suggest the enemies will have varying difficulties. There are strong hints of a campaign after all. That of which implies character and narrative progression.
Roguelike Mechanics in Project F
This one word says a lot. When one says roguelike, several associations come to mind.
Common roguelike features include:
- Roleplaying
- Dungeon crawling
- Procedurally generated levels
- Turn-based gameplay
- Attribute points
- Skills
- Fog of war mechanics
- Line of sight mechanics
It will be interesting
It will be interesting to see which of these roguelike mechanics will be in Project F is it is released.
Project F, A Live Service Game
There is a common element we’ve been seeing between Riot Games R&D (research and development) products. “Keeping the game fresh for years to come”. Specifically, the quote “for years to come” has been seen on R&D employees’ social media posts and R&D job postings.
That phrase strongly implies a live service game. In fact, the job summary even included these terms. What does that mean for Project F?
Notwithstanding there will be a campaign, Riot Games has intentions to expand on the campaign. The same could be said for the other forms of progressions such as gear, professions, skills and more.
The iteration and monetization of these elements transitions nicely into other features seen such as changing seasons.
Project F Seasons & Themes
As expected, a live service game must generate revenue in order to cover costs, provide assurance for continuity and, and reinvest into fresh content.
It is no surprise, the season model for video games has been widely popular. This is especially true for free-to-play games because the box price revenue is non-existent.
For those who are unaware, the season will often last anywhere from 2 – 4 months. Additionally, the season will share a common theme. It would be a lunar new year, an in-game narrative event, or a business collaboration with another established intellectual property. There are several ways Riot Games could add seasons into Project F.
It begs the question, will seasons be integrated into fresh content? Will themes be incorporated into just cosmetic items and environmental art. Perhaps a bit of both?
Project F Will Be in Unreal Engine 5
We’ve reporting on Project F being developed in Unreal Engine before.
As you can see, the image above shows an art designer creating the League of Legends champion, Lulu in Unreal Engine. Between the job experience summary image shown above and this image, we are confident the developers have been using Unreal Engine4/Blueprint to begin with.
Then, the Project F team quite possibly transitioned from UE4 (Unreal Engine 4) to Unreal Engine 5 in mid 2021.
Combining Possible Project F Features Leads to Strong Inferences
Our long list of features found for Project F are great in isolation. Although when combining some features we come to some interesting possible conclusions.
Feature 1 | Feature 2 | New Feature |
Quests | Daily Quests | Replayability |
Live Service | Changing Seasons | Battle Pass |
Systems Features | Crafting Materials | Professions |
Enemies | Randomization | Loot Tables |
Encounters | Roguelike mechanics | Strategy |
Enemies | Encounters | Dungeons |
The Project F Genshin Impact Dynamic
In closing, our first view of Project F gave us the impression it would be an isometric multiplayer ARPG (action roleplaying game).
Now, thanks to the recent discovery, we know an ARPG is in development at Riot Games. It appears to share most if not all of the characteristics of what we know as Project F.
But, it’s explicitly a third-person game.
Is this the same game?
Did Project F switch to from isometric to third-person?
We can’t say with certainty. Although it appears Project F was originally created prototyped in Unreal Engine 4/Blueprint. Then, in mid 2021, they transitions from Unreal Engine 5 and decided to go third-person.
