Recently, we discovered a job description for a Riot Games employee that includes, working on matchmaking for an R&D project. This was according to his LinkedIn page. This article will outline which games this matchmaking news could be applicable to.
According to Tim Jung’s LinkedIn profile, he is a Staff Software Engineer at Riot Games. Tim writes, “Working on cool R&D stuff“.
After posting his ‘Starting a New Position’ LinkedIn post, a few other Riot Games employees, among other individuals congratulated Tim on the new job / promotion.

Matchmaking – Possible Games
We don’t know exactly which project Tim is working on. Until we know, here’s a list of all publicly known R&D games we know of followed by a detailed breakdown of each.
Riot MMO Matchmaking
The Riot MMO has one of the most expansive teams in the research and development department. You can even see our detailed R&D Team Org Chart for yourself. Therefore, the likelihood is reasonably high that Tim Jung could be working on Matchmaking for the Riot MMORPG.
If true, that would mean Riot Games plans on including ranked matchmaking into the game. From this point onward, we’ll assume ‘ranked matchmaking’ includes PvP content.
Riot Games is well-known for designing highly competitive games and events for their players. The Riot MMO could be the next installment to continue the trend.
Several ideas of been tossed around regarding how PvP could look in the League of Legends MMORPG. Some possibilities include:
- Arena
- Open World
- Large Scale Siege
- Dueling
- Deathmatch
- League of Legends MOBA within the Riot MMORPG
Not only that, but our Discord Members have introduced a number of PvP centric discussions such as:
Riot Project F Matchmaking
It’s possible Tim is instead working on Project F, Riot Games’ in-development action roleplaying game. Furthermore, we hypothesize Project F will be the first R&D game to release, after Project L of course. With that said, we believe Project F is quite far considering it began development as early as May 2018.
We’re not confident Project F will have ‘skill determination’ components, given its appearance suggests a casual co-op action adventure game. Nonetheless, given that there are likely to be boss encounters, group finder / dungeon queue, we postulate these features could be present:
- Ranked timed dungeon runs
- Skill based group finder
- PvP Mode(s)
Riot Project T Matchmaking
There is a strong possibility Project T will have skill based matchmaking regardless of this post or Tim’s job description. Keep in mind Project F is a MMOFPS (Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter). Think, Destiny 2.
To reiterate on our in-depth Project T post, Riot Games plans to make a MMOFPS that caters to beginners alongside experts. In addition, previous job postings have requested experience in competitive video game development. As well, Riot Games hired at least one former Destiny 2 employee named Ben Platnick. Therefore, we think Project T could have the following modes:
- Ranked and Unranked PvP
- PvPvE Modes
- Wide Variety of PvP Game Modes
- PvE Group Matchmaking
Riot Project L Matchmaking
There’s little doubt in most fans’ mind’s that Project L, Riot’s upcoming fighter, will have ranked skill-based matchmaking. By now, Riot Games has become well known for supporting and pushing the esports scene. Not only that, but fighting games are just born to be played competitively. Think Super Smash Bros, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and others.
Truth is, we hope it turns out Tim Jung isn’t working on Project L because we think it will have a ranked mode anyways. Plus, that would mean there’s strong evidence to suggest skill based ranked matchmaking on yet another R&D project by Riot Games. To round out this thought, there are several Riot Games employees confirmed to be working on Project L who only include R&D in their job title. Tim Jung could very well fit that scenario. Nevertheless, we will update this page when more information turns up.
Conclusion
Tim Jung is a LinkedIn verified Riot Games employee. He is working on creating a ranked skill-based matchmaking system for a R&D project. We don’t know which project just yet.
Best case scenario, we get skill based matchmaking for all of the Projects. Worst case is he’s on Project L given we’re most confident Riot’s already-competitive-arcade-fighter will have ranked skill-based matchmaking. Let’s hope Riot MMO matchmaking is a thing. But as previously mentioned, this page will be updated as more information comes to light.
